Modi Cabinet approves MSP hike for 14 Kharif crops for 2025-26 marketing season
New Delhi, May 28, 2025 – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 Kharif crops for the 2025–26 marketing season, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring fair and remunerative prices for farmers.
The revised MSPs are aimed at encouraging higher crop production, improving farm incomes, and promoting crop diversification across regions.
“The move is part of the government’s ongoing strategy to boost farmer welfare and ensure sustainable agriculture,” a statement from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) said.
- The highest absolute MSP increase has been approved for:
- Nigerseed: ₹820 per quintal hike
- Ragi: ₹596 per quintal hike
- Cotton: ₹589 per quintal hike
- Sesamum: ₹579 per quintal hike
These increases reflect both rising input costs and the need to incentivize cultivation of nutri-cereals and oilseeds, which are crucial for nutritional security and self-reliance in edible oils.
The MSP for common paddy, a major staple, has already been revised to ₹2,369 per quintal, as announced earlier by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
