Chandigarh, June 21, 2025 — The Punjab Cabinet, in a series of important decisions on Friday, approved several policy reforms aimed at strengthening welfare, governance, and law enforcement in the state. Below are the key highlights:
Labour Welfare Contribution Doubled
The Cabinet has approved an amendment to the Punjab Labour Welfare Act, significantly increasing the contributions toward worker welfare:
- Employees' contribution raised from ₹5 to ₹10
- Employers' contribution doubled from ₹20 to ₹40
This move is expected to boost the Labour Welfare Fund, enabling the government to expand social security schemes for workers in Punjab.
Chief Secretary to Head Regional Planning Board
In a significant administrative shift, the Punjab government has decided that the Chief Secretary will now chair the Punjab Regional Planning and Development Board, replacing the Chief Minister in that role.
The decision comes as the Chief Minister handles multiple high-level responsibilities. However, final approval of all housing-related plans under the board will still rest with the CM.
500 New Posts Created in Punjab Prisons
The Cabinet has approved the creation of 500 new posts in the state’s prison system to strengthen jail administration:
- 29 Assistant Superintendents
- 451 Wardens
- 20 Matrons
This decision aims to improve management, security, and rehabilitation facilities across Punjab's correctional institutions.
Green Light to Cabinet Sub-Committee on Drug War
To intensify Punjab's fight against drug abuse, the Cabinet has approved the formation of a Cabinet Sub-Committee on Anti-Narcotics Strategy.
- Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema will serve as Chairman
- Four additional ministers will assist in shaping and executing state-level strategies to combat substance abuse.
