Night vigil ordered on Ghaggar river banks in Sangrur amid rising water levels: DC Rahul Chaba

Sangrur (Punjab), September 1, 2025 - In light of the current flood situation and increased water level in the Ghaggar River, Deputy Commissioner Sangrur, Rahul Chaba, has ordered the initiation of night vigil along the banks of river Ghaggar passing through District Sangrur.
To ensure the safety of the surrounding areas, 15 sensitive points, where breach had occurred in 2023, along with other locations along the river have been identified, where strengthening of the river banks with sand bags including jumbo bags.
Special teams comprising employees from the Irrigation and Revenue Departments, along with local villagers, have been formed to monitor these sensitive points from dusk to dawn. In addition to this, the Deputy Commissioner has directed police patrol on the river banks during the night hours.
The Deputy Commissioner has also instructed that areas where breaches occurred in 2023 be closely monitored by the Irrigation Department. SDM Suba Singh, the local DSP along with XEN Drainage Buta Singh are personally supervising the situation to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken to prevent breach.
The Deputy Commissioner warned that any miscreants attempting to breach the river banks or cause damage to the flood protection infrastructure will be dealt with strictly under the law. Such actions will not be tolerated, and those found responsible will face severe consequences.
As a precautionary measure, the Deputy Commissioner has appealed to residents to avoid visiting or roaming in the vicinity of the banks of the Ghaggar River passing through Sangrur district. Public cooperation is essential to ensure smooth passage of water through Sangrur district and to prevent any untoward incidents.

The Deputy Commissioner reiterated that the safety and well-being of the people remain the top priority of the administration, and all necessary measures are being taken to mitigate the impact of the flood situation.
