Former NIA DG and Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta joins IIT Ropar as Professor of Practice

Ropar (Punjab), December 10, 2025: Former Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and ex-DGP Punjab, Dinkar Gupta, a highly decorated and distinguished retired IPS officer, has joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar as a Professor of Practice.
Gupta brings with him nearly four decades of frontline experience across national security, counterterrorism, intelligence, cyber security, internal security, law enforcement, investigation, public policy, and strategic governance. His appointment is expected to significantly strengthen IIT Ropar’s engagement with real-world security challenges and policy-oriented research.
According to IIT Ropar, Gupta will play a pivotal role in bridging academia, government and strategic affairs, helping students understand the practical dimensions of technology, innovation, and national security.

He will mentor students and researchers on subjects such as AI-driven law enforcement, intelligence fusion, cyber security, internal security, and technology–policy interfaces. He will also collaborate with faculty on research projects with national relevance.
Shri Dinkar Gupta served the nation for 37 years in the Indian Police Service (1987–2024). His illustrious career includes leadership roles such as DG NIA, DGP Punjab, DG Intelligence Punjab, Additional DGP (Law & Order and Security), and key positions during his central deputation with the Intelligence Bureau. He has been honoured multiple times by the President of India for gallantry and distinguished service.
Following his retirement from NIA in March 2024, Gupta has continued to contribute in the domains of public policy, strategic advisory, governance, and corporate leadership. He currently serves as Senior Advisor (Strategy, Innovation & Public Services) at Tata Consultancy Services, Advisor (Security), and also sits on the boards of several major companies as an Independent Director.
Gupta has long been associated with academic and training institutions globally. He has earlier served as a Visiting Adjunct Professor at George Washington University and American University (Washington DC), and has been affiliated with the Chevening Gurukul Programme (1999) and the London School of Economics.
He has undergone professional training with global policing institutions such as Scotland Yard, London Metropolitan Police, and the New York Police Department, and has represented India at the INTERPOL General Assembly in Vienna.
Established in 2008 in Rupnagar, Punjab, IIT Ropar is emerging as a leading national institution in science, engineering, and technology education. The institute drives innovation through its advanced research centres, Technology Business Incubator, IPR cell and national-level R&D collaborations, contributing to India’s infrastructure, energy transition and technological advancement goals.
