Youth enthusiasm among 50.05% voter turnout in Zila Parishad polls amid fog and minor clashes in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, December 12, 2025: Elections for Zila Parishad and Block Samitis in Ferozepur passed largely marked by high youth voter enthusiasm, barring two clash incidents and total voter turnout in the district was 41%.
Poor visibility due to fog and a cold wave affected polling for the zila parishad and panchayat samiti in most of the villages as it was only 5.2% within 3 hours by 11 AM, and later on picked up to 15.20% till 12 noon and 37.60% by 2 PM and polling was 50.05% by 4 PM. However, final poll percentage was still being tabulated.
The polls covered 14 Zila Parishad zones and 112 Block Samiti zones across six Panchayat Samitis: Ferozepur, Ghall Khurd, Madot, Zira, Makhu, and Guruharshai. A total of 4,91,291 voters—comprising 2,59,880 men, 231,408 women, and three others—were eligible to vote at 891 polling stations.
A notable incident of violence erupted at booths in Bukkan Khana Wala and Betu Qadim due to an old rivalry. Police, district administration, and locals intervened swiftly, resolving the matter without further escalation. One person sustained serious injuries, and his beard and turban were allegedly disrespected. The injured individual, a local leader, was hospitalized, and police are investigating. At another polling station in Nizam Wala, a youth caused a disturbance by falsely posing as an intelligence department employee.
Voter turnout remained robust despite these incidents, particularly in high-stakes zones like Bazidpur (Baljit Kaur Zone), dubbed a "hot seat" due to the candidacy of Gurpreet Singh Sekhon's wife. Sekhon, recently released on High Court orders after serving 10 years in prison for his role in the Nabha Jail break (though on bail in other cases), has shifted focus to social activities and politics.
First-time voters also shone brightly. Muskan Sharma, voting for the first time in Bazidpur Zone, shared her excitement and urged young people to prioritize village development by choosing candidates wisely, undeterred by external influences or cold weather. Security was robust at most booths.
The polling began at 8 am and continued till at 4 pm. The counting of votes will take place on December 17.
