MP Amritpal Singh appears before High Court via video conferencing, presents his case

Chandigarh, December 16, 2025: Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh, currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court via video conferencing that his continued detention has completely stalled the functioning of his parliamentary constituency.
Appearing before the court during the hearing, Amritpal Singh submitted that due to his incarceration, he has been unable to discharge his constitutional duties as an elected representative. He stated that his detention has prevented him from raising crucial issues in Parliament, including floods, drug abuse, and alleged fake encounters.
The MP argued that prolonged detention under the NSA has severely obstructed his ability to represent his constituents, thereby affecting not only his fundamental rights but also the democratic voice of the voters who elected him to Parliament.
The matter was heard by a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjeev Berry. Amritpal Singh personally addressed the court through video conferencing as lawyers were abstaining from work.
After hearing the submissions, the High Court initially ordered the matter to be taken up post-lunch and later adjourned the hearing till tomorrow.
