Chandigarh, December 17, 2025: In compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh on Tuesday carried out a citywide enforcement drive against unauthorised and unregistered street vendors encroaching upon public spaces, with a special focus on the Manimajra area.
Acting on the apex court’s orders directing unauthorised vendors to vacate public land and relocate to allotted sites within designated vending zones, MC Chandigarh intensified its enforcement operations to ensure strict adherence to the law.
The Supreme Court had also instructed the civic body to undertake a special drive to remove encroachments from public roads, footpaths and other public properties, and to submit a compliance report through an affidavit.
As part of the action, enforcement teams inspected multiple locations across the city. By 6:00 pm, as many as 310 challans were issued to vendors found operating without registration or occupying unauthorised sites.
The drive gains significance amid persistent complaints of pedestrian inconvenience, traffic congestion and misuse of public land due to illegal vending activities. The Municipal Corporation clarified that while the rights and livelihoods of legitimate street vendors will be safeguarded in accordance with the law, encroachments on public property and violations of vending norms will not be tolerated.
Appealing to vendors, MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, IAS, urged them to operate only from approved vending zones and strictly comply with the provisions of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act and allied rules in the larger public interest.
