New Delhi, December 24, 2025: With 2025 drawing to a close and the New Year 2026 just days away, customers planning important banking work in January are advised to take note of the holiday schedule in advance.
According to the holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks across various cities will remain closed on several days in January 2026 due to festivals, regional observances and national holidays, apart from regular Saturdays and Sundays. Customers are advised to check the holiday list before visiting bank branches to avoid inconvenience.
Digital Banking Services to Continue
Despite branch closures, digital banking services such as internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs and UPI will remain operational. However, services that require physical presence at bank branches, including cheque clearance and certain KYC-related work, should be planned in advance. Banks will remain closed on occasions such as New Year’s Day, Makar Sankranti and Republic Day.
Bank Holidays in January 2026 (As per RBI Calendar):
- January 1 (New Year’s Day): Banks closed in Aizawl, Chennai, Kolkata, Shillong, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar and Kohima.
- January 2 (Mannam Jayanti): Holiday in Aizawl, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
- January 3 (Hazrat Ali’s Birthday): Banks closed in Lucknow.
- January 4: Sunday – banks closed nationwide.
- January 10: Second Saturday – banks closed across India.
- January 11: Sunday – weekly holiday.
- January 12 (Swami Vivekananda Jayanti): Banks closed in Kolkata.
- January 14 (Makar Sankranti/Magh Bihu): Holiday in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Itanagar.
- January 15 (Pongal/Uttarayan): Banks closed in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Gangtok.
- January 16–17 (Thiruvalluvar Day and Uzhavar Thirunal): Banks closed in Chennai.
- January 18: Sunday – weekly holiday.
- January 23 (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti/Basant Panchami): Holiday in Agartala, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata.
- January 24: Fourth Saturday – banks closed nationwide.
- January 25: Sunday – weekly holiday.
