Ambala (Haryana), June 9, 2026: Union Minister of State B. L. Verma on Tuesday said the under-construction “Azadi Ki Pehli Ladai Ka Shaheed Smarak” in Ambala Cantonment is poised to become the largest martyrs' memorial in Asia and a major centre for learning about India's freedom struggle.
After inspecting the memorial along with Haryana Minister Anil Vij, Verma said the project would offer young generations an opportunity to experience and understand India's history through immersive exhibits and modern technology.
Spread across 22 acres and being developed at a cost of around ₹700 crore, the memorial will feature 22 galleries showcasing the 1857 War of Independence, revolutionary movements and the sacrifices of freedom fighters.
Verma said historical documents displayed at the site indicate that the first spark of the 1857 uprising originated in Ambala Cantonment, adding that the memorial presents significant evidence that deserves wider recognition.
Praising Anil Vij's efforts in conceptualising and pursuing the project, the Union Minister described the memorial as a landmark initiative that would emerge as a global attraction and a new symbol of patriotism and historical awareness.
He also expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would soon dedicate the memorial to the nation, allowing visitors from across India and abroad to explore its rich historical legacy.
The memorial is expected to become a major cultural and tourism destination, highlighting India's freedom struggle through state-of-the-art galleries, historical artefacts and interactive exhibits.
