Man booked for not depositing licensed arm despite directions of Election Commission
Ferozepur March 29, 2019: The police have booked one person for the delay in depositing his licensed weapon with the police station in view of the Election Commission guidelines ahead of Lok Sabha elections.
The Ferozepur Police is always up in arms to maintain law and order in the city but with the announcement of Lok Sabha elections in Punjab on May 19, a special vigil has been launched by Sandeep Goel, SSP, to ensure the process of elections to the world’s largest democracy in a free, fair and transparent manner which pose sometimes immense challenges with respect to logistics.
The district administration has asked all licensed gun owners to deposit their firearms with the police ahead of Lok Sabha polls on May 19. The Licence-holders are mandated to deposit their arms in their jurisdictional police stations before the elections, which would be kept safe till the completion of the elections.
Police have launched intensive search operations by holding nakas to check to carry of weapons in violation of the orders of the District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner and Election Commission.
Prem Singh, IO informed that during the checking at Pilot Chowk in Ferozepur Cantonment area, one revolver .32 bore No.FG 8471, with three live cartridges were recovered from Angrej Singh of village Bhana in District Faridkot carrying in his Scorpio car PB03W0084. The arms licence was produced but he was booked under Section 188 IPC - 188. Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant - for violating the directive of DC and Election Commission. However, he was released on bail.
SSP Sandeep Goel on law and order status said against total 22430 arms, so far 69 percent and appeal has been made to the remaining to immediately deposit the same.
On retaining the weapon for personal security, he said, the individual should apply for the same and only after clearance from the Screening Committee constituted for the purpose, one can be allowed, and otherwise, he is liable for action for violation of the instructions.
Arms license holder usually includes bank managers, businessmen, former police officers, and ex-servicemen. Many also keep guns for self-protection or status symbol. Even some had security licence for crop protection. Only the Screening Committee can take a decision on gun owners who have sought exemption from the rule, which include mostly security guards involved in escorting vehicles carrying cash to banks and ATMs.
