CHANDIGARH, MAY 07, 2019: Flaying both BJP and Congress leaderships for turning the City Beautiful into a garbage mess, Boota Singh on Tuesday demanded an apology from them besides advocating an urgent redressal to the Daddu Majra garbage dump.
Reiterating his advocacy for innovative solutions to tackle the growing health menace, the former Bureaucrat who is contesting as an Independent Candidate from Chandigarh assured residents that the he would personally lead this mission to get this dump shifted.
During his visit to Daddu Majra to take first hand stock of the situation, Boota Singh got overwhelming response and support from residents who lauded him for giving voice to their grievances and assured him of fulsome cooperation in this regard.
Lamenting the official apathy for which hapless citizens were forced to bear the brunt, Boota Singh said that the Hyderabad and Indore Model can be replicated here and can be taken as a case study. He also said that rather than giving contract to any private company, we can hire heavy machinery on rent and can use own Municipal Corporation resources to start getting it cleared in two shifts.
The anger in public against the insensitivity of political class which had ruled Chandigarh till now is nowhere more evident, Boota Singh said adding that the site was overflowing with legacy waste – recyclables like plastic, metal etc which were damaging the environment in more ways than one.
Need of the hour is to go for Bio-remediation or bio-mining, which is an environmentally friendly technique to separate soil and recyclables like plastic, metal, paper, cloth and other solid materials from legacy waste,” informs Boota Singh adding that, “The work has to be taken up on war footing.
The first and foremost step should be to identify the land in the nearby areas and start shifting the garbage on regular basis to such small dumping grounds away from residential area. Mountains of garbage are piling up, and combustibles like cloth, plastic, wood and paper catch fire, polluting the air and it was high time we combined our efforts to preserve out City.
He further pointed out that the topmost layer in a landfill is usually dusty and may have several materials that are still in the active biological state. This layers thus needs to be stabilized using herbal or biological sanitisers. The sanitized layer is then raked through to pull out rags, plastic, rubber, textiles etc. stones, bricks, ceramics etc. can be removed before sending the segregated waste to appointed contractors or recyclers.
The recyclables recovered from the biomining process can be sent for recycling, recyclable polythene can be sent to cement plants and also for road making. The soil recovered can be used for refilling the ground on the same site .The recovered construction and demolition waste can be recovered and sent to the Construction & Demolition processing facility to produce building materials. The leftover, about 20 – 25 % of the waste, can be sent to a secured landfill.”
The housing colonies nearby are facing the curse of pollution due to the open dumpsite. It is only because of the negligence of both parties that people are baring the burden of several years of dumping and are still in a pitiful state. The situation just needs an administrative correction on regular basis .
