Nawanshahr Police turns " Khaki" into true colour of care and compassion.

Nawanshahr, April 12, 2020: The Nawanshahr SSP, Alka Meena has virtually turned " Khaki" into a true colour of care and compassion . As the Nawanshahr district emerged as the first ' Hot Spot" of the dreaded COVID-19 in Punjab , consequently the Punjab became the first state in the country to take immediate emergency step of imposing curfew. Since then, the district police under the aegis of " Punjab Police + NGOs Helping Hand" , has been ameliorating the sufferings of underprivileged section of the society in a well planned as well as transparent manner during the present unprecedented crisis. Besides, performing its prime duty of maintaining law and order to keep people state safe in their homes, the district police has also been exerting their nerves to provide grocery items at the door steps of the needy. The distinguished feature of the drive is that the men in Khaki have virtually been galvanised into " Shravan Kumar" to provide help to elderly people, who are living alone, at their doorstep.
" Under " Punjab Police + NGOs Helping Hand", the brain child of the SSP, Alka Meena, launched the drive ' No One Sleep Hungry" ( NOSH) and the local philanthropists and NGOs were mobilised to lend a helping hand to serve the needy during the Lock Down period", said DSP Raj Kumar, Nodal Officer of the project , while adding that the concept got an encouraging response from a large number of local doctors, NGOs and social workers including Awaj, Arya Samaj, Mahavir Jain Yuvak Mandal, Prem Nagar Welfare Society, MS Gulati in the very beginning. The wholehearted donations started pouring in and the initiative had now turned into a caravan as more and more NGOs and philanthropists came forward to extend support for the noble cause.
SSP Alka Meena while expressing her gratitude towards the cops, philanthropists, volunteers of the different NGOs associated with the drive said that the concept behind it was to implement the precautions and preventive measures especially " Stay Home, Stay Safe" in its true spirit during the lock down period. For keeping the underprivileged section of the society especially the daily wagers safe in their homes, it was necessary to provide them basic necessities. Hence, in the beginning, the grocery kits were provided to them at their door steps. The proper transparency as well as precautions were observed to ensure that the donations be properly utilised to provide help to the genuine beneficiaries.
Besides providing as many as 6755 grocery kits , 203400 cooked food packets to the needy and ration items including 110 kg. wheat flour, 130 kg,rice, 10 kg pulses, 560 kg. potatoes to the different langar committees so far, the " Punjab Police + NGOs Helping Hand" society has virtually lent new dimensions to its community service project currently underway in the district to help people fight the COVID-199 crisis. The SSP, Alka Meena, making the drive comprehensive and compassionate . has also distributed 20000 sanitary pads among women, 40 medical kits, 300 mosquito repellent creams and organic oil to the cops put on duty at nakas. The policemen are going door to door to locate the elderly couple living in distress during the present crisis to lend a compassionate ear as well as providing them the requisite help.
