Jalandhar: Administration gears up for ensuing Monsoon season
Asks officials to immediately initiate works of revetments, spurs, studs, and cleansing of drains to ensure safety of flood-prone areas
Says, administration spends 3.39 crore last year to cover up all vulnerable points
Jalandhar, April 7, 2021: With a view to ensure safety of people from floods during the ensuing Monsoon season, district administration Jalandhar is all set to commence a series of flood-protection works along the river Satluj besides cleaning of drains in coming days.
Participating in a state-level flood protection review meeting on Wednesday Chaired by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, the deputy commissioner informed about the steps being taken by the administration in Jalandhar. He stated that a slew of works worth crores of Rupees are to be initiated in coming days along the bank of river Satluj so that before the Monsoon season these works could be completed.
Divulging the details, the deputy commissioner said that the proposed works would be carried out in the villages which were worst hit during the 2019 floods.
He further added that construction of revetment, studs and spur repairing would be done on priority in villages Maowal, Mao Sahib, Ganna Pind, Thammuwal, Madala, Jania, Mandala, Gidderpindi, and many others.
A total of 99 flood protection works along with cleansing of different drains have been identified in all the five sub divisions of the district at an outlay of Rs. 34.20 crore and proposals were already sent to the government adding Mr. Thori said thay these works would ensure a robust anti-flood mechanism during this Monsoon season.
The deputy commissioner apprised the Chief Minister that during the last year a large number of flood-protection works had been carried out by the administration at an outlay of Rs. 3.39 crore.
He added that these works comprised the raising of embankments, construction of studs and revetments, and cleansing of drains adding all these works were completed within stipulated time-frame.
Notably, during 2019 floods as many as 21 breaches were reported in the district, which affected a total of 103 villages, he said. The DC further added that the administration has been focusing on all these sensitive points and villages to prevent any kind of similar situations in future. He stated that at the onset of Monsoon, district, sub division, and Tehsil-level flood-control rooms are made functional for proper monitoring and coordination among departments.
The deputy commissioner reiterated the district administration's commitment to ensuring safety of people from floods at any cost as a variety of measures had been taken after the 2019 floods. Prominent among others present on the occasion included District Revenue Officer Jashanjit Singh, Superintending Engineer Ashutosh Kumar, Executive Engineer Navjot Singh, SDO Ashish Sharma, and SDO Kushminder.
