Nawanshahr: Punjab Education Department launches English training initiative for teachers

Nawanshahr, August 31, 2024: The Punjab Education Department has kick-started an initiative aimed at improving English proficiency in government schools’ teachers. Under the leadership of Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Director SCERT Amrinder Brar and Assistant Director Dr Amandeep Kaur, a comprehensive training program for English teachers is currently underway in the nine districts of state during its first phase.
The nine districts where this training is going on are Amritsar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Patiala, Barnala, Fatehgarh Sahib and SAS Nagar.
In Jalandhar, its being held at Government School Nehru Garden, and the program is coordinated by State Nodal Officer Chander Shekhar and features a team of expert resource persons.
These experts have been specially trained by the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the US Embassy and are now sharing their expertise with English teachers across the state.
The training encompasses several critical areas designed to address various aspects of language teaching. One key component is ‘Foundations of English Language Teaching and Learner Needs’, which explores fundamental concepts of language education and the specific needs of learners in second language classrooms. This segment aims to build a solid base for effective English teaching.
Another crucial area covered is Adapting Instructions and Managing Diversity.
This module equips teachers with strategies to adjust their teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and needs, ensuring that all students receive effective and personalized instruction.
The program also focuses on Classroom Management Techniques, providing teachers with practical methods to maintain a well-structured and conducive learning environment.
Enhancing Motivation is another important aspect of the training. This module offers strategies to increase student enthusiasm and involvement in learning, which is vital for academic achievement.
Lastly, the training includes Monitoring a Language Classroom and Providing Feedback, teaching educators how to effectively assess and provide constructive feedback to support student progress.
State Nodal Officer, Chander Shekhar said that this initiative represents a significant effort by the Punjab Government to elevate the standard of English education in government schools.
“With around 575 teachers trained in this first phase, the program is set to make a substantial impact on improving English language skills among students, paving the way for enhanced educational outcomes across the state”, he added.
