Nawanshahr: School Students learn about segregating waste at homes and waste processing

Nawanshahr, October 18, 2024: More than one hundred students from the Government Schools in District SBS Nagar embarked on field trips to various waste processing facilities to learn about the Municipal Council Nawanshahr's waste management efforts.
During the excursion, they witnessed horticultural waste composting, compost pits for kitchen waste and at the Material recovery Facility, waste shredding and bailing machines for baling of waste plastic.
Mr Rajiv Verma, Deputy Commissioner SBS Nagar highlighted that the Sustainability Leaders program aligns with the 'Swachhata Hi Sewa' campaign, aimed at sensitizing students to be change-makers in the Clean India Mission.
The program includes live sessions, webinars, field visits, and innovative projects, helping students develop a strong connection to waste management and fostering responsible citizenship.
Suresh Kumar District Education Officer SE , mentioned that they have targeted over 1050 students from 21 schools for the field visits to waste processing facilities and sensitisation sessions for 100-150 students every day. Later, students will be assigned activities based on their field experiences.
The Sustainability Leaders Program is a structured internship program, designed by Suhani Sharma, Class XII student of Delhi Public School, Chandigarh, launched this year on 1st October 2024, for students in grades 8th-12th.
Over 30000 students from 461 schools have registered online for participation in the program.
Last year this program was successfully conducted in district Mohali for 1200 students led by Ms Aashika Jain, IAS DC SAS Nagar.Surekha Thakur, the State Coordinator from the Education Department informed that so far over 15000 students have been sensitised on ground.
Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company ( PMIDC) has mapped the schools with the Urban Local Bodies where Community Facilitators are anchoring field visits and sensitizing students to stop single-use plastic items and segregating waste at point of generation leads to sustainable waste management.
