Chandigarh, October 26, 2024: Snehalaya witnessed a captivating chess competition, attracting talented young minds from various age groups. The Children Home for Boys in Village Maloya, run by Chandigarh Child & Women Development Corp. Ltd. under the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) Act 2015, is part of Social Welfare Department UT Chandigarh.
With a capacity of 300, it aims to protect vulnerable children from abusive, hazardous environments and provide them safety from physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, ensuring their right to protection. The prime objective of Children Homes is the rehabilitation and reintegration of children into mainstream society.
The chess competition, divided into four age groups—under 12, 14, 16, and 18—showcased the strategic skills of young players vying for top positions. Organized by Navraj Singh Gill, Secretary of the Chess Club at Strawberry Fields High School and founder of NGO Educatree, in collaboration with Snehalaya officials, the event saw enthusiastic participation from boys in various age categories.
He mentored the participants, teaching them chess fundamentals and preparing them for future competitions.
Sixteen participants, including the winners, were honoured during the prize distribution ceremony held later in the day. The enthusiastic cheers from the students in the audience reflected their excitement and interest.
Navraj expressed “On entering the Snehalaya, one would see an eclectic display board full of paintings by Snehalaya boys, followed by a colourful rangoli, past this an art room equipped with instruments and material where students create art products and exhibit at various exhibitions.
The rugby players have been consistent winners in various competitions. So, be it making an effigy of Ravan or overnight preparation of Ramlila and performance, there is no dearth of talent at the Children Home for Boys. With the right mentorship, these young individuals can be guided toward a bright and successful future”.
He appealed through the media to the public to come forward to help these children hone their skills for a better future rather than making sweet distributions only in the name of charity.
Chess plays a crucial role in developing a child's critical thinking, strategy-building, and decision-making abilities, helping them navigate complex challenges and prepare for a world of cutting-edge competition.
Navraj's dedication and wholehearted cooperation of Snehalaya have equipped these young talents with essential skills for both chess and life.
Superintendent Snehalaya, highlighted the impact of the event, stating, "Initiatives like this chess competition foster cognitive development, creativity, and confidence in young participants."
Snehalaya officials also praised the collaboration, noting, "These events offer a valuable platform for talent identification and skill enhancement, encouraging participants to strive for excellence and represent their schools and state/UT in future tournaments."
The event concluded with the children enjoying healthy homemade delicacies prepared in their own mess. With bright, excited eyes, they eagerly looked forward to more such events in the future.
