7 kids undergo liver transplant at Rela Hospital, Chennai

The 7 children aged between 6 months to 13 years including from Tricity and Punjab had successfully undergone living donor liver transplants at Rela Hospital, Chennai. The kids were diagnosed with complications like wilson disorder, acute liver failure, glycogen storage disorder and biliary atresia failed kasai.
Initially the kids were treated at Chaitanya Hospital, Chandigarh which is the outreach clinic centre. Later an expert team including Dr. Jagadish Menon, paediatric gastroenterologist, hepatologist & liver transplant physician and Dr. Naresh Shanmugam, director women and child Health & senior consultant paediatric gastroenterology & hepatology performed and managed the transplants for these kids. Kids’ parents were the donors for the liver transplants.
Giving information during a press conference here on Saturday, Dr. Jagadish Menon said that kids were referred to Rela Chennai for a liver transplant due to their health complications, where the liver transplant was the only option available for their survival.
He further said that for children who had advanced liver disease or liver failure, liver transplant was the only option as curative treatment.
