Chandigarh, May 19, 2024: Speaking on the state of farmers across the globe, Devinder Sharma, Food Policy Analyst, Researcher, and Writer said that soon a stage will come when farmers will start saying they cannot produce food anymore.
On his official LinkedIn, Devinder Sharma shared various forms of farmers' agitation that are taking place across the globe.
"It happened in Northern Ireland some time back when dairy farmers held a protest carrying banners that said loudly that the distress prices supermarkets were offering to farmers it will not be possible to feed the people. Meanwhile, Farmers For Action (FFA) in Northern Ireland has published a report, On Life Support, from Paul Gosling, an economist. The report calls for legislative intervention to protect farmers and the fair pricing of agricultural produce and is asking for a Farm Welfare Bill to be introduced in Northern Ireland. Earlier, Confederation Psyanne, a small farmers organisation in France had met the Prime Minister and asked for a legislation to ensure a guaranteed cost of production with social costs included. This only shows that farmers world over are now realising how they have been short-changed all these decades. This is in resonance with the demand for a legal mechanism for Minimum Support Price (MSP) in India. It is time to know why people who feed us have to sleep hungry. The entire supply chain makes money except for the primary producer," he added.
