New Delhi, September 15, 2025: India is preparing for another big leap in the world of digital payments. Soon, people will not need to stand in long queues at banks or search for ATMs to withdraw cash.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is working on a revolutionary facility that will allow customers to withdraw money by simply scanning a QR code at nearby shops. NPCI has already sought approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and once granted, the service will be rolled out across the country.
How will it work?
- Step 1: Visit a nearby shop or service center registered as a Business Correspondent (BC).
- Step 2: Scan the QR code displayed using any UPI app (such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm).
- Step 3: Enter the amount you wish to withdraw. The money will be debited from your bank account and credited to the shopkeeper’s account.
- Step 4: The shopkeeper will hand over the same amount in cash instantly.
Why is this important?
Currently, card-less cash withdrawal through UPI is available at limited ATMs and shops, with transaction limits of ₹1,000 in urban areas and ₹2,000 in rural areas. NPCI’s new plan aims to expand this facility to over 20 lakh Business Correspondents across India.
This initiative will make banking services more accessible in rural and semi-urban areas where ATMs and bank branches are scarce. It will connect millions of people more easily to the banking system and give a fresh boost to the Digital India mission.
