Sydney / Adelaide, Australia, November 3, 2025:Australia’s Assistant Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Julian Hill has publicly apologised to Indian singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh after the artist faced racist slurs upon his arrival in Australia for his ongoing concert tour.
In a statement to The Australia Today, Hill condemned the racist comments directed at Dosanjh, asserting that there is no place for racial discrimination in Australia.
“Nobody should be discriminated against for who they are, and I’m sorry that Diljit has copped such rubbish from a tiny minority of idiots,” Hill said.
“The positive and educative spirit in which Diljit Dosanjh has responded to some of the vile racist comments directed at him online is to be admired and respected — it’s very clear who is the bigger person in this. I’m so glad Diljit is in Australia, and we welcome him.”
Diljit Dosanjh, who is currently on tour in Australia, shared that he had come across racist remarks made about him on social media shortly after his arrival. Some users had mocked his appearance, comparing him to a driver or convenience store worker.
“When I landed in Australia, some agencies reported it. Someone sent me the comments section of one of those reports. People were saying things like, ‘Uber driver aa gaya’ (the Uber driver is here), or ‘the new 7/11 employee has landed,’” Dosanjh said in a video message.
Responding calmly, the artist said he took no offence to such comments, instead using the moment to highlight respect for working-class professions.
“I don’t mind being compared to a cab or truck driver. If truck drivers cease to exist, you won’t get bread for your home. I’m not angry, and my love goes out to everyone,” he said.
