Distt Committee reviews senior citizens' welfare and security measures
Ferozepur, November 28, 2025: A comprehensive district-level committee meeting focused on the safety, facilities, and welfare of senior citizens was held today under the chairmanship of SDM Ferozepur-cum-Assistant Commissioner (General) Gurdev Singh Dhamm. Constituted under Rule 25 of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Rules, 2012, the meeting addressed multiple critical issues concerning the elderly population.
During the deliberations, a detailed report on security services being provided to senior citizens was presented by, Social Services Department, highlighting proactive measures to ensure their safety. Special emphasis was placed on healthcare initiatives, including the organisation of regular medical camps to address the health needs of the elderly. The committee also discussed arrangements for conducting camps to issue Senior Citizen Cards, facilitating easier access to government benefits.
The operational efficiency of Old Age Homes came under detailed scrutiny, with specific action plans outlined for improving facilities and care services. The meeting reviewed the progress of cases pending in Sub-Divisional Magistrate courts under the Senior Citizens Act, 2007, ensuring the timely resolution of legal matters concerning elderly welfare.
The Education Department shared valuable insights into ongoing initiatives aimed at inculcating respect and care for senior citizens among the younger generation through school programs and awareness campaigns. These efforts seek to foster a culture of dignity and responsibility towards the elderly in society.
Addressing the gathering, SDM Gurdev Singh Dhamm emphasised the paramount importance of senior citizens, stating, "Senior citizens are the valuable heritage of our society. The government is committed to ensuring that all welfare schemes reach them effectively at the grassroots level, guaranteeing their security, health, and dignity."
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Simranjit Singh PCS, Rajbir Singh PCS, DSSO Kanwaljit Singh, Dr Harpreet Kaur (Medical Officer), Harish Monga, P.D. Sharma, Harish Goyal, Makhan Lal, and Usha Rani. The discussions underscored the Punjab Government's coordinated approach to creating a supportive ecosystem for the elderly population in Ferozepur district.
