Pakistan : Girls fined for speaking Punjab in Women College, Strong protests by Punjabis in Lahore

Lahore, November 8, 202020 : A woman college in Layalpur in Pakistani Punjab has started slapping fine on students fro speaking Punjabi. Against this action of the college and for not giving due respect for Punjabi language in government working and education, there is a strong wave of resentment in Punjabi language supporters. For the first time institutions, organizations and personalities working in favour of Punjabi united at a single platform and protested against discrimination against mother tongue Punjabi.
Under the banner of this Platform named as ‘Punjabi Parhao Tehreek” , a large number pro-Punjabi people, on Saturday, held strong protest rally in Lahore in front of Lahore Press Club. This rally was held on three issues. Slogans were raised against Layalpur Woman College Principal who slapped fines on students who spoke Punjabi in college. Second was protest against foul language used by Pakistani Minister Fyaz al Chauhan against Punjabi language and protestors also burnt his effigy. Third and most important was demand was to implement Punjabi from school level. It was demanded that decision of the Lahore High Court to introduce Punjabi at school level should be implemented and government should obey court order. A large number of women were also part of protests.
