Community service at Covid-19 center’s for mask violators: Govt issues orders
Chandigarh, December 2, 2020: Observing that the imposition of a fine for not wearing a mask in public against Covid-19 is not working as a sufficient deterrent for the public, the Gujarat government has now made community service compulsory for the violators.
As per the notification issued by the Gujarat government on December 2, those not wearing a mask in public will have to do compulsory community service in Covid-19 centers.
The government issued the notification following the orders of the Gujarat High Court. Pertinently, the orders were made on the petition filed by Advocate Vishal Awtani, seeking an appropriate direction to the State to increase the fine for not wearing a face mask.
The petitioner had urged that the fine for not wearing the mask should be increased to Rs 2000 in the cities of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot while for the rest of the state it should be Rs.1,000. Awtani had further asked the court to make violaters work in community centers for at least 10 to 15 days.
While hearing the petition on Friday, the high court has made the suggestion compulsory community service for the violators and ask state government to take a call on it.
