If the Centre does not want to stay the implementation of farm laws, we will put a stay on it: SC
Chandigarh, January 11, 2021: Chief Justice of India SA Bobde on Monday expressed disappointment on the ongoing farmer’s agitation and debate over farm bills.
“We are disappointed with the way the process is going,” said Chief Justice of India while hearing a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the three farm laws
“We don't know what negotiations are going on? Can the farm laws be put on hold for some time?, CJI further asked.
He further expressed concern on the conditions of farmers who are the part of the agitation and holding dharna at Delhi borders for over a month now.
“Some people have committed suicide, old people and women are a part of the agitation. What is happening?, says CJI, and added that not a single plea has been filed that said that the farm laws are good.
CJI also took a dig at the lackadaisical approach of the government while dealing with farmers issues.
“If the Centre does not want to stay the implementation of farm laws, we will put a stay on it,” told CJI.
"We do not think Centre is handling the issue correctly. We have to take some action today. We don't think you are being effective."
He also warned the center on the possibility of situation getting out of control.
“Each one of us will be responsible if something goes wrong. We don't want anybody's blood on our hands,” he said.
"The Union of India must take responsibility for all this. You (Centre) are bringing the laws and you can do it in a better manner," says CJI during hearing on farm laws
Similarly, senior advocate Dushyant Dave while appearing for one of the farmers’ unions asked, “How can such important laws be passed through voice vote in Parliament If the Centre is serious, then it can hold a joint session of Parliament. Why is the govt shying away from it.”
