SC hearing on Farm bills: Last chance for PM Modi to make amends, says Bajwa
Chandigarh, January 11, 2021: Welcoming Chief Justice of India SA Bobde observations on framers’ agitation on Tuesday, member of Parliament Partap Singh Bajwa said that it is the last chance for Prime Minister to resolve the farmers' issue.
The Supreme Court on Monday held hearings on multiple petitions relating to the farm laws passed by the Union government.
“The government should never have let this situation continue for this duration. Now is the last chance for the Prime Minister of India to intervene in this matter. The Supreme Court should not be stepping in to fill the vacuum created by policy paralysis within the Government. If the Prime Minister does not step in now to show magnanimity and agree to the demands of the farmers, the people of India will further lose faith in the executive and legislative branches of government,” said Partap Singh Bajwa.
“I welcome the Honourable Chief Justice of India’s observations on the issue and await the order from the Supreme Court. Nevertheless, as a Member of Parliament, it is unfortunate to see the depth of inaction from the Executive. This inaction is a sign of how our democratic institutions have simply failed or have been ignored by the present Government. The Parliament should have been given enough time to further deliberate on these reforms. It was my hope that the Government would act before being forced to do so by the Supreme Court. The Government can still end these protests tomorrow if they repeal these laws. Sometimes the simplest solution is almost always the best solution,” he added.
