Chandigarh, January 12, 2021: While staying the implementation of all the three farm bills until further orders on Tuesday, the Supreme Court also formed a 4 member committee to hold talks with farmers over the Act.
Know the four members of the committee formed by SC:
Ashok Gulati, Agricultural Economist
Winner of Padma Shree, Ashok Gulati is the Infosys chair professor for Agriculture at Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations. Comparing the farmers legislation with de-licensing of the industry in 1991, Gulati had earlier said that government is all set to liberalize the agriculture sector with the new farm laws. "The economic rationale of these pieces of legislation is to provide greater choice and freedom to farmers to sell their produce and to buyers to buy and store, thereby creating competition in agriculture market."
Anil Ghanwat, President of Shetkari Sangathan( a Maharashtra-based farm union)
Ghanwat has termed the new farm laws as a ‘reform’. “New laws will ensure freedom for the agriculture sector,” stated Ghanwat in September last year.
"There is no need to withdraw these laws which have opened up opportunities for farmers," stated Ghanwat.
Pramod Kumar Joshi, Director of National Centre for Agriculture Economics and Policy Research
A leading name in the field of agriculture research, Joshi is former South Asia Coordinator at the International Food Policy Research Institute.
"Any dilution in the farm laws will constrain India agriculture to harness emerging global opportunities," Joshi has stated.
Bhupinder Singh Maan, National President, Bhartiya Kisan Union
Also the chairman of All India Kisan Coordination Committee (KCC), Maan in a letter to PM in September last year also gave suggestion on new farm bills.
"Reforms are needed in order to make agriculture competitive," Maan has said.
