Mohali, February 10, 2021:
A 42-year-old man today committed suicide inside the building of PSPCL (Punjab State Power Corporation Limited) in Phase 1 here.
The victim, Sompal (42) was husband of Munni Devi, a Bhartiya Janta Party women candidate from ward number 37 of Mohali.
The victim was working as a daily wage sweeper along with his wife in PSPCL here.
Mohali Deputy Superintendent of Police (city 2) Gursher Singh Sandhu informed that Sompal committed suicide this morning at around 8.30 am by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of a room in the building of PSPCL. "The victim's wife is contesting elections of Municipal Corporation from ward number 37. The victim hails from Muradabad in Uttar Pradesh and was currently putting up in Mataur village here in rented accommodation with his wife and four children. No suicide note was recovered from the spot," said the DSP.
The victim's wife registered a complaint against a former Mohali councilor and the owner of their house in Phase 1 police station. She said Sompal was beaten by a former councilor of Mohali and his accomplices. They were also pressuring Sompal to withdraw the name of his wife from the nomination form following which he was under depression for the last couple of days and hence took this extreme step.
"We have sent the dead body to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital in Phase 6 here. The inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC have been initiated and the case will be registered after the investigation of the whole matter is completed," said Gursher Singh Sandhu.
