Mohali, February 17, 2021: The results of the civic body elections in the district except for the Mohali (SAS Nagar) Municipal Corporation (MC), were declared today, in which the Congress won five municipal councils out of seven. The ruling party got a clear majority in the municipal councils of Kurali, Dera Bassi, Zirakpur, Lalru, and Banur. However, the party was not able to make it to Kharar and Nayagaon councils.
The three councils - Zirakpur, Dera Bassi, and Lalru, where Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was having great grip for the past many years, have now been bagged by the Congress. Congress will now form its council in Zirakpur after 21 years whereas in Dera Bassi and Lalru, they get the chance after 10 years. Captain Kanwaljit Singh and former SAD MLA NK Sharma had remained the strong heavyweights of the Dera Bassi constituency which comprises Dera Bassi, Zirakpur, and Lalru. The party also got a clear majority in Banur and Kurali.
On the other side, the SAD was able to lead only in the Nayagaon council today by getting 10 seats out of 27. Congress got 6 seats, BJP got and two went to independents.
The only council, where the hung house is formed, is Kharar as out of total 27 seats, Congress won on 10, SAD on 8 and 8 seats have been won by independents. However, Congress claims that they will elect their president here as all 8 independents are their members only.
Both Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) felt the result day not less than a nightmare as out of total 145 seats in seven councils; AAP won a single seat, while BJP managed to get five. The duo failed to open their accounts in many wards.
