Mohali issues Advisory for rational use of oxygen for management of COVID-19
Mohali, April 29, 2021:
An ‘Advisory for Oxygen Saving Strategy in ICU /wards’ for optimum use of oxygen for all government and private hospitals treating COVID patients has been issued by the state government for complete compliance from all the hospitals, informed Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan.
The advisory is being shared with all the concerned private and government COVID hospitals in the district, to be followed in letter and spirit. Primarily, the advisory suggests targeting SpO2 of 90-92 % for all patients, provided they are comfortable. Early detection and repair of potential sources of leakage of oxygen from flow meters/cylinders/pipelines, adequate training sessions for staff about "How to save oxygen", use of oxygen concentrators in mild cases, use of supportive man oeuvres like awake proning to be considered in hypoxemic patients.
It suggests initiating oxygen therapy depending upon the severity of respiratory illness, use of Nebulizer instead of oxygen flow for nebulization of patients. Besides, the oxygen flow rates for patients on Nasal prongs, the points to be considered in patients on High Flow nasal Canula and points to be considered in patients on Invasive/Non-Invasive Ventilation have been detailed.
