The police recovered cash money worth Rs 6.9 lakh, ATM card cloning machine (card data scanner), micro camera, a laptop, two mobiles and a smart watch from their possession.
The arrested fraudsters have been identified as Savej and Rajiv Kumar, both residents of Jalandhar.
Mohali SP Gurjot Singh Kaler informed the media that the fraudsters had duped several innocent people to the tune of lakhs by using ‘ATM card cloning’ method. They used to fix micro cameras inside the smoke sensor, installed in ATM booths, and a cloning machine in the ATM kiosk. Through the cloning machine, they were getting details of all cards, inserted in the kiosk by the customers. The micro camera helps them to know the PIN of the card by reading the finger movements of a customer. They had mainly targeted ATM booths of Phase 1 and Phase 5 area of Mohali after recce, where no security guards were deployed. They were running this scam in Jalandhar by making cloned cards through their laptop, said the SP.
“The arrested persons are highly educated. Savej did his graduation in BCA. They studied dark net and were also added in Telegram and WhatsApp groups of criminals/fraudsters. With the arrest of the duo, we have solved over 100 cyber complaints in the Mohali area. They have been duping the people since December,” said SP Kaler.
He added that during their interrogation, they also revealed the name of their third accomplice, Bimal Mehra, who would be arrested soon.
A case under Sections 420, 120-B of the IPC and 66-c, 66-D of the Information Technology Act has been registered against the accused at the Phase 1 police station. Further investigation is on.
SP Gurjot Singh Kaler appealed that everyone should hide the keypad of ATM kiosks with a hand while entering PIN.
