Farmers to meet Chandigarh SSP to demand release of 3 protesters sent to judicial custody

The farmers of Kisan Ekta Chandigarh union will meet the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Chandigarh on Monday to demand immediate release of three protesters, who were arrested on Sunday for attacking vehicles of Chandigarh mayor and leader Sanjay Tandon.
The UT police on Sunday arrested three farmers, identified as Rajinder Singh (45), a resident of Burail, Chandigarh, Harpreet Singh (46), a resident of Phase 7, Mohali and Malwinder Singh (32), a resident of Maloya, Chandigarh. They have been arrested under many Sections including attempt to murder. The trio was produced before a local court in Chandigarh, which sent them to judicial custody. Inspector Surinder Singh, SHO of Sector 49 police station said, “The three accused were sent to judicial custody by the court today. Further investigation is on.”
The decision was taken in a meeting held in front of Bestech Mall, Sector 66 here between the leaders of Kisan Ekta Chandigarh. Satnam Singh, one of the protesters' leaders, said, “We have decided to meet Chandigarh SSP tomorrow for demand the release of our companions. In case our demands are not met, the farmers in a large number will block the UT barrier at Mullanpur and Zirakpur. Also, the next course of action will be decided on Monday.” He added, “The UT police have falsely implicated us in cases. None of us had attacked the vehicles of mayor and Sanjay Tandon as we were protesting there peacefully. The planted BJP goons were behind these acts to damage our peaceful protest.”
However, the Sanyukat Kisan Morcha later clarified that there was no call by the SKM to block Chandigarh. The SKM is working hard to release the protesters, who were arrested by the Chandigarh police, it stated.
Notably, Chandigarh police on Saturday had arrested around 19 protesting farmers including two women for allegedly attacking vehicles of mayor Ravi Kant Sharma and Sanjay Tandon, co-incharge of BJP Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. As per the UT police, some protesting farmers attacked the BJP leaders as well as broke the glasses of their vehicle while they were returning from the place of function. In this regard, a case FIR No. 55 dated 17.07.2021 U/s 147, 148, 149, 341, 427, 307, 506, 269, 270 IPC has been registered at Police Station Sector 49, Chandigarh which is under investigation.'
