PAU organizes field day on Maize
Ludhiana: September 14, 2021: The Department of Extension Education and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare organised a field day on maize at village Siarh.
The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr JS Mahal, Director of Extension Education, PAU. About 60 farmers participated in the event and later a field visit to the demonstrated field was also organized.
Dr Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Extension Education, said that the department was instrumental in popularizing maize cultivation in the district and in this concern, a total of 47 demonstrations on maize hybrid PMH 13 have been organised so far.
Dr Jawal Jindal, Senior Scientist (Entomology), detailed important aspects in insect-pest and disease management with special focus on proper management of the invasive pest, fall army worm in maize.
Dr Pankaj Kumar, Extension Scientist, said that this village was adopted by PAU for various extension activities and as a part of it, demonstrations on new hybrid of maize PMH 13 were given. He further explained the importance of maize cultivation for sustainable agriculture.
Dr Dara Singh, Agriculture Development Officer, informed the farmers about various schemes of the government for the farmers’ welfare.
Dr Parkash Singh, Agriculture Officer, dwelt upon various agronomic practices, such as, land preparation, time of sowing, seed rate and sowing methods. Further, he advised farmers to use recommended dose of fertilizers in the crop or use fertilizer on the basis of soil test report and Leaf Colour Chart. He also stressed upon other important crops for diversification, such as, moong, gram and canola sarson.
In her welcome address, Dr Harwinder Kaur, Agriculture Development Officer, explained the soil sampling procedure in detail.
Dr Lavleesh Garg, Extension Scientist, apprised the farmers of the facilities being provided by Skill Development Center, PAU, Ludhiana and asked them to undergo skill development trainings for profitability.
