Chandigarh, December 4, 2023: Senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia was not allowed to meet convict prisoner Balwant Singh Rajoana, a death row convict in former Chief Minister Beant Singh assassination case, lodged in Central Jail Patiala.
As per the press statement issued by Patiala Jail Superintendent, a representative of Shiromani Akali Dal presented an application on November 30 in the office of ADGP, Prisons, Punjab seeking approval for Bikram Singh Majithia (ex-MLA) and Virsa S. Valtoha to meet convict prisoner Balwant Singh Rajoana, any day before December 5.
On December 1, the application was sent by the Prisons Headquarters Office, Chandigarh to the office of Superintendent Central Jail Patiala for taking suitable decisions as per law and rules, as Superintendent Jail is the competent authority to decide on such matters.
After a thorough examination of the application as per the Punjab Prison Rules, 2022, it was decided by the Supdt. Jail, Patiala not allow both public figures to meet the prisoners in Central Jail Patiala.
"In this regard, Bikram Singh Majithia was also conveyed verbally on the phone about the denial of permission as per the Punjab Prison Rules on 02.12.2023 by the Supdt Central Jail Patiala. Hence, the fact that both the political leaders were denied permission to meet convict prisoner Balwant Singh Rajoana on the spot is incorrect," read the press statement by Superintendent, Central Jail Patiala.
