Punjab Women Commission Chairperson takes suo moto notice of Ludhiana public shaming incident

Ludhiana (Punjab), January 22, 2025:Punjab Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill has taken suo moto notice of the shocking incident in Ludhiana, where a factory owner allegedly blackened the faces of a woman, her three daughters, and a young man, accusing them of theft, and paraded them publicly.
The victims were forced to wear plaques (mentioning 'Main han chor') declaring themselves as thieves, an act that has drawn widespread outrage.
Raj Lali Gill condemned the incident, terming it a grave violation of human rights and women’s dignity. She assured strict action against the accused and called for immediate intervention by the authorities.
"No one has the right to take the law into their own hands, especially by humiliating women and families in such a degrading manner," she stated.
The Women’s Commission has demanded a detailed report from the Ludhiana police and urged swift justice for the victims.
Meanwhile, the police have confirmed they are investigating the matter, and action will be taken based on evidence, including the widely circulated videos of the incident.
The woman involved maintains her innocence, stating that she and her family were wrongly accused and assaulted. This suo moto action by the Women’s Commission is expected to expedite the case and ensure accountability.
