SVEEP-Led debates in Ferozepur address urban apathy, inspire civic responsibility
Ferozepur, January 25, 2025: To combat urban apathy and its adverse effects on voter participation and civic engagement, the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) team of Ferozepur organized inter-college debates as part of National Voters’ Day 2025 celebrations. Spearheaded by Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer and Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer, Deepshikha Sharma, the events fostered meaningful discussions among students, educators, and officials on building a participatory democracy.
At Shaheed Udham Singh College, Mohan Ke Hithar, students from 11 teams debated the causes of urban apathy, such as time constraints, reduced sensitivity to social issues, and rising individualism. Solutions, including community-driven initiatives, civic education, and empathy-building programs, were widely supported. SVEEP Coordinator Parvinder Singh Lalchian moderated the event, concluding with Dr. Sunil Kumar Khosla’s call for students to implement these ideas.
Similarly, HKL Institutions in Guru Har Sahai explored the negative impact of urban individualism on voter turnout. Participants proposed leveraging media, youth-focused programs, and role models to enhance civic participation. Institution Chairman Dr Praveen Gupta led the session, with top performers recognized and the SVEEP team urging participants to counter urban disengagement.
At the Agarwal School of Nursing, nursing students suggested localized community initiatives and targeted campaigns to address urban apathy. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ms. Divya P. emphasized the youth’s critical role in promoting civic responsibility and participation.
Common themes across all events highlighted the need for civic education, youth empowerment, and community engagement to reverse urban apathy trends. The debates inspired students to take action, reaffirming the youth’s role as catalysts for a more engaged and participatory society. Recognized by district officials, the initiative marked a significant step in bridging the gap between urban citizens and their civic responsibilities.
