Punjab braces for intense heat; rain may bring relief after May 17

Chandigarh, May 14, 2025: Punjab is bracing for a surge in temperatures as the weather takes a sharp turn towards extreme heat. According to the latest report from the Meteorological Department, the average maximum temperature across the state has increased by 1.6°C. While the rise is still within the seasonal range, the intensity of the heat is now clearly being felt.
Heatwave Set to Worsen
Experts predict that the temperature will continue to rise over the next three days, potentially causing further discomfort for residents. Relief may arrive after May 17, when light rain is expected in parts of the state.
Bathinda Hottest, Chandigarh and Ludhiana Scorching Too
On Wednesday, Bathinda recorded the highest temperature at 41.7°C, which is 2.4°C above normal. Other cities also experienced sweltering conditions — Chandigarh recorded 39.9°C, Ludhiana 40.6°C, and Patiala 40.4°C.
Heatwave Conditions in Amritsar and Gurdaspur
The mercury crossed 38°C in districts like Amritsar and Gurdaspur, resulting in heatwave-like conditions in several areas. Medical professionals have advised the elderly and children to stay indoors during peak hours and avoid direct sun exposure.
Rain Forecast for 11 Districts
Light, scattered rainfall is expected on May 17 in about 11 districts, including Nawanshahr, Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa, Bathinda, Fazilka, and Muktsar Sahib.Though the rain may affect less than 25% of these areas, it could help bring down the soaring temperatures slightly.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the day, and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses as the state moves into peak summer conditions.
