In view of the approaching monsoon season, the Sangrur District Administration has launched a comprehensive drive to prevent flood-like situations and ensure public safety. Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Rishi has directed all concerned departments to complete essential preparations well in advance of the rains.
Chairing a review meeting with officials, Rishi stressed the need for proactive disaster management and instructed the Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) to draft and implement a District Disaster Management Plan without delay.
To mitigate the risk of waterlogging and flooding, the Deputy Commissioner ordered the immediate desilting and cleaning of the Ghaggar River, with a strict deadline of June 30. He also emphasized the cleaning of syphons, ponds, and drains across both rural and urban areas to facilitate the free flow of rainwater.
Taking a firm stance on accountability, Rishi warned that Executive Officers would be held personally responsible in cases where water accumulates in towns due to negligence. He instructed the use of super suction and jetting machines provided by the Punjab Government for efficient drainage maintenance.
The Deputy Commissioner also directed preparations for setting up relief camps, formulating communication plans, and identifying vulnerable areas (hotspots). The Civil Surgeon has been asked to constitute response teams at the district and tehsil levels and ensure sufficient stock of essential medicines.
Rishi noted that embankment reinforcement carried out last year has significantly improved the district’s flood resilience. He assured residents that the administration remains committed to safeguarding public life and property throughout the monsoon.
“The District Administration is fully prepared and determined to protect the lives and well-being of Sangrur’s citizens during the rainy season,” he said.
