Punjab reels under Floods: Over 3.54 Lakh Affected, 30 Dead, 1,400 Villages Inundated

Nearly 20,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas; 5,167 are sheltered in 174 relief camps.
Floods have damaged over 1.48 lakh hectares of cropped area.
Chandigarh, September 3, 2025 – Punjab is facing one of the worst floods in recent decades, with all 23 districts hit by rising waters. So far, 30 lives have been lost and more than 3.54 lakh people affected. Officials said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the state government is making every possible effort to deliver timely relief, evacuate residents, and ensure rehabilitation of those displaced.
So far, 19,597 people have been evacuated to safety from low-lying and flood-affected areas. These include 5,581 from Gurdaspur, 3,432 from Ferozepur, 2,734 from Amritsar, 2,422 from Fazilka, 1,615 from Hoshiarpur, 1,428 from Kapurthala, 1,139 from Pathankot, along with 369 from Barnala, 474 from Jalandhar, 65 from Rupnagar, 163 from Mansa, 115 from Moga, and 60 from Tarn Taran.
To provide shelter and essential facilities, 174 relief camps have been set up across Punjab. These include 29 in Barnala, 26 in Patiala, 25 in Gurdaspur, 20 in Hoshiarpur, 16 in Amritsar, 14 in Pathankot, 10 in Fazilka, 9 in Moga, 8 each in Ferozepur and Jalandhar, 4 in Kapurthala, 3 in Rupnagar, and 1 each in Mansa and Sangrur. Currently, 5,167 people are sheltered in these camps, with the highest numbers in Fazilka (1,304), Hoshiarpur (1,041), Ferozepur (706), Gurdaspur (424), Amritsar (371), Barnala (369), Jalandhar (474), along with Mansa (163), Moga (115), Sangrur (60), Kapurthala (57), Pathankot (48), and Rupnagar (35).
The worst-affected districts include Gurdaspur (324 villages), Amritsar (135), Hoshiarpur (119), Kapurthala (115), Mansa (108), Ferozepur (93), Pathankot (82), Fazilka (72), Jalandhar (62), and Tarn Taran (66). Additionally, 48 villages in Moga, 44 in Rupnagar, 34 in Barnala, 26 in Ludhiana, 23 in Sri Muktsar Sahib, 16 in Patiala, 15 in Faridkot, 13 in Sangrur, and 5 in Malerkotla have also been affected.
Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian stated that a total population of 3,54,626 across 13 districts has been affected. The worst-hit are Gurdaspur (1,45,000), Amritsar (1,17,534), Ferozepur (38,112), and Fazilka (21,562). Other affected districts include Pathankot (15,053), Kapurthala (5,748), SAS Nagar (7,000), Hoshiarpur (1,960), and Jalandhar (991). Lesser impact was seen in Barnala (403), Moga (800), Rupnagar (300), and Mansa (163).
Floods have also damaged 1,48,590 hectares of crops. The worst-hit areas include Gurdaspur (40,193 hectares), Mansa (27,291), Amritsar (23,000), Kapurthala (14,934), Ferozepur (14,665), Tarn Taran (11,883), Hoshiarpur (5,971), Jalandhar (3,000), and Pathankot (2,442). Other affected districts include SAS Nagar (2,000), Patiala (1,450), Moga (949), Rupnagar (300), Faridkot (141), Ludhiana (108), Bathinda (97), Sri Muktsar Sahib (84), Fazilka (64), SBS Nagar (7), Malerkotla (5), Sangrur (3), Barnala (2), and Fatehgarh Sahib (1 hectare).
Regarding deployment of forces, the minister informed that 23 NDRF teams are working tirelessly across affected districts – 1 in Pathankot, 6 in Gurdaspur, 6 in Amritsar, 3 in Ferozepur, 3 in Fazilka, 1 in Bathinda, 2 in Jalandhar, and 1 in Rupnagar. The Army, Air Force, and Navy have deployed 12 units for rescue and relief, with 8 more on standby. Additionally, 2 engineer teams and around 35 helicopters are engaged in relief work. The BSF is also assisting in ground-level operations in border districts. For evacuation and supply, 114 boats and one state helicopter are in service.
Between August 1 and September 2, 30 people have lost their lives across 12 districts, with Pathankot recording the highest (6 deaths). Three persons in Pathankot are still missing. Officials added that once water recedes, the full extent of livestock and infrastructure damage will be assessed, but preliminary reports indicate heavy losses.
