Sangrur City on Ventilator? Residents write to CM Mann over broken roads, unsafe water and civic neglect

Sangrur (Punjab), September 22, 2025:Residents of Sangrur have written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, highlighting the city’s deteriorating civic infrastructure and urgent need for government intervention.
In their letter, the residents described Sangrur as being “virtually on a ventilator,” citing issues such as unsafe drinking water, broken sewage systems, uncollected garbage, damaged roads, public space encroachments, and unchecked illegal constructions. They expressed disappointment that despite Sangrur being the Chief Minister’s hometown and represented by senior leaders of his party, the city has suffered neglect.
The letter specifically criticized the non-performance of the local MLA, Shri Narinder Bharaj, and cited the erratic handling of the Executive Officer (EO) position in the Municipal Council. In the past month alone, officers have been repeatedly transferred:
- 20 Aug 2025: EO Shri Ashwani Kumar transferred out despite a rejected request for early retirement.
- Subsequently: Shri Sunil Dutt Verma given additional charge from Gidderbaha.
- 5 Sept: Shri Ashwani Kumar returned to Sangrur.
- 15 Sept: EO shifted again, posting Shri Ashish Kumar, who has not yet joined and faces a pending departmental charge sheet.
Residents warned that such instability has paralyzed municipal operations, while technical staff vacancies remain unfilled. They requested personal intervention from the Chief Minister to ensure administrative stability, fill vacant posts, and implement corrective measures within the remaining year before elections.
The delegation, led by 93-year-old Shri Harbinder Singh Sekhon, requested a meeting with CM Mann to discuss solutions and revive Sangrur’s civic infrastructure.
Ms. Jasinder Sekhon, representing the residents, concluded the letter by urging an immediate and positive response.
