Chandigarh gets 328 more e-buses under PM-e-Bus scheme; total sanctioned rises to 428
Chandigarh, October 23, 2025:
The Government of India has approved 328 additional electric buses for Chandigarh under the PM-e-Bus Service Scheme, taking the city’s sanctioned e-bus count to 428 and marking a major step toward carbon-free public transport. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria thanked Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for the approval and said it will accelerate Chandigarh’s transition to clean mobility.
Kataria said the approval reflects sustained efforts by the Chandigarh Administration and continued engagement with the Union ministry to shift the city’s bus fleet to electric in a phased manner for faster, cleaner, and quieter urban transit. He emphasized that converting the entire public bus fleet to electric is crucial to realize the ‘City Beautiful’ vision of a carbon-free city.
Welcoming the decision, Kataria noted that the additional allocation will strengthen public transport with better connectivity and passenger convenience while improving environmental sustainability. He added that sanctioning 428 e-buses is a decisive move toward transforming Chandigarh into a model green city with a modern, eco-friendly transport network.
The Governor appreciated the proactive cooperation of the ministry and Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) in expediting Letters of Confirmation of Quantity (LOQ) and Letters of Award (LOA) for the previously approved 100 e-buses, enabling timely implementation. He said the administration remains in close coordination to ensure rapid rollout and seamless integration into city routes.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment, Kataria said Chandigarh will continue expanding clean transportation infrastructure in line with sustainable urban development goals. He added that these measures will enhance public amenities while contributing to a greener, cleaner, and healthier environment for future generations.
