Ministry of Education accepts students' demand, no change in PU Senate
New Delhi/Chandigarh, November 7, 2025: The Ministry of Education on Friday withdrew its notification to change the constitution and composition of Panjab University’s Senate and Syndicate, saying the decision was taken after consultations with students, teachers, former vice-chancellors and the current vice-chancellor.
The ministry had earlier notified changes under Section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, based on recommendations of a High Level Committee constituted by the Chancellor on March 2, 2021, and ensuing stakeholder consultations. That order has now been rescinded, with the ministry stating there will be no change in the Senate.
Following the initial notification, the ministry said it received extensive feedback from stakeholders and also held meetings with various student organisations. Having considered these inputs, it decided to roll back the order altering the Senate and Syndicate’s constitution and composition.
With Friday’s decision, the existing governance structure of the Panjab University Senate and Syndicate will continue without the proposed changes.
