Pargat Singh calls Centre’s five new bills “Anti-Punjab”; Accuses AAP & BJP of misleading people on Chandigarh issue

Jalandhar (Punjab), November 29, 2025: Senior Congress leader Pargat Singh strongly opposed the five bills slated for introduction in the upcoming winter session of Parliament — the Education Commission Bill, Atomic Energy Bill, Electricity Bill, National Highway Authority Bill, and Chandigarh Bill — calling them “anti-Punjab” and detrimental to the state’s interests.
Addressing the media, Singh alleged that both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were deceiving the people of Punjab, especially on the contentious Chandigarh Bill. He said Chief Minister
Bhagwant Mann’s claims of the Bill being withdrawn held no truth. “No official withdrawal has taken place. Empty statements cannot mislead Punjab,” he said.
Reiterating Punjab’s rightful claim over Chandigarh, Pargat Singh said the Union Territory has always been the capital of Punjab by constitutional and historical right.
“When a new state is created, the parent state retains its capital. Why should Punjab be treated differently? Chandigarh belongs to Punjab — legally, historically, and morally,” he stated, accusing both BJP and AAP of attempting to “rob Punjab of its rightful capital.”
Pargat Singh also condemned the AAP government for what he termed the “mockery” of Punjab’s democratic institutions.
He criticized the recently held mock Assembly session involving children, saying it trivialized serious issues and disrespected the dignity of the Vidhan Sabha.
“Important matters of Punjab are being reduced to comedy sessions. The Opposition’s voice is suppressed, and governance has turned into a spectacle,” he said.
On questions about a possible BJP–Shiromani Akali Dal alliance for the 2027 Punjab elections, Singh questioned how the Akali Dal could justify joining hands with a party he claims is “attacking Punjab daily.”
“From attempts to take full control of BBMB to targeting Chandigarh and damaging the agriculture sector — the BJP’s actions are against Punjab’s core interests. How can any regional party claiming to protect Punjab even consider an alliance?” he asked.
Pargat Singh warned that both parties are misleading the public and vowed strong resistance to any move that undermines Punjab’s political, cultural, or constitutional rights.
