Rs 27.73 crore project launched in Abohar to tackle waterlogging, boost horticulture: Mohinder Bhagat

Chandigarh, March 9, 2026: Mohinder Bhagat, Punjab Minister for Defence Services Welfare, Freedom Fighters and Horticulture, informed the House during the ongoing session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha that a major project is underway in the Abohar area to promote horticulture and address the long-standing problem of waterlogging.
Responding to a question raised by Sandeep Jakhar, MLA from Abohar, the minister said the project is being implemented by the Department of Soil and Water Conservation in the region.
He said that under the first phase, work has already begun in 27 villages at an estimated cost of ₹27.73 crore, while 15 additional villages will be covered in the second phase of the project.
Bhagat stated that once completed, the initiative will significantly help resolve the waterlogging issue in the Abohar region and provide a major boost to the horticulture sector. He added that the project will create additional income opportunities for farmers through horticulture and diversified crop cultivation.
The minister further said that under the leadership of Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is committed to strengthening the horticulture sector and promoting sustainable agricultural development in the state.
He added that the project will also contribute to better water conservation and long-term agricultural sustainability in the region.
