Chandigarh, March 18, 2026: The Shiromani Akali Dal on Tuesday alleged that the Punar Surjit Akali Dal has made misleading claims regarding the alleged acceptance of its petition by the Election Commission of India, and urged the outfit to clarify its position.
In a statement, senior SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema cautioned leaders of the Punar Surjit Akali Dal against what he termed as the spread of “false information” in the media. He alleged that such claims could create confusion among the public and questioned the legitimacy of the outfit.
“It appears that leaders of this group are attempting to create confusion among Punjabis and project legitimacy for their organisation. Instead of making such claims, they should first clarify whether they have been formally registered as a political party by the Election Commission,” Cheema said.
He further urged the outfit to make its registration status public and, if necessary, issue an apology for what he described as incorrect assertions.
Cheema also stated that he had reached out to Anandita Mitra, who, according to him, indicated that there was no information available regarding any such petition being accepted by the Election Commission.
The SAD maintained that the claims being circulated are allegations made by the rival outfit, and emphasised the need for accurate information to avoid misleading the public.
