Chandigarh, April 8, 2026 – Arhtiyas (commission agents) across Punjab on Tuesday announced the end of their nearly week-long strike following a consensus reached with government representatives.
The decision came after a prolonged meeting between arhtiya leaders and officials, during which their key demands were discussed. After receiving assurances from the government, the arhtiyas decided to resume work in mandis with immediate effect.
With the strike being called off, wheat procurement and lifting operations—halted for the past several days—are expected to pick up pace. The development brings much-needed relief to farmers who were already facing difficulties due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms, as it clears the way for smooth weighing and sale of their produce.
The arhtiyas had suspended mandi operations for nearly a week over various demands, including commission-related issues and administrative concerns. The government convened the meeting on Tuesday in view of the seriousness of the situation, leading to the breakthrough.
