Amritsar (Punjab), May 24, 2026:A major tragedy struck Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib on Sunday after heavy iron shuttering plates from an under-construction building collapsed onto devotees, killing two women and injuring several others.
The heartbreaking incident occurred during ongoing construction work inside the historic gurdwara complex in the holy city of Amritsar. According to reports, a five-storey building, including a langar hall and car parking facility, was being constructed under the supervision of Sant Baba Kashmir Singh Bhuriwale.
As it was Sunday, a huge number of devotees had gathered at the gurdwara to offer prayers. Due to the intense heat and large rush of devotees, many women were sitting near the under-construction area in the shade while reciting Gurbani.
During this time, heavy iron linter plates suddenly collapsed and fell directly onto the devotees sitting below, triggering chaos and panic inside the premises.
At least nine women were seriously injured in the accident. Two women later succumbed to their injuries, while the condition of three others remains critical.
Sewadars and devotees present at the spot immediately launched rescue efforts and shifted the injured women to Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital and other hospitals in the city for treatment.
Officials of the gurdwara management committee personally assisted in transporting the injured to hospitals.
Police teams also rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. Civil Defence Incharge Sukhchain Singh confirmed that two women had died in the tragedy, while seven to eight others were undergoing treatment at different hospitals in Amritsar.
SP Vishaljit Singh, who reached the scene, said all the injured women had been shifted for medical treatment, adding that the condition of two to three women was reported to be serious.
Some eyewitnesses also claimed that strong winds had been blowing since morning and suspected that the weather conditions may have contributed to the collapse. However, authorities have not yet officially confirmed the exact cause of the incident.
