NewYork (US), September 14, 2025: A United Nations report has highlighted increasing state control and restrictions in North Korea over the past decade. The report notes that the government has implemented stricter monitoring and punitive measures for activities it considers “anti-socialist,” including the distribution of foreign media.
The UN Human Rights Office said that technological surveillance under the Kim regime has grown since 2014, contributing to a climate of heightened oversight and limitations on personal freedoms. The 14-page report draws on interviews with more than 300 defectors and witnesses who described tighter restrictions and enforcement measures.
According to the report, severe punishments have been applied in some cases to those involved in sharing foreign films or television content, reflecting the regime’s efforts to control information. The UN emphasized that these developments represent an ongoing erosion of civil liberties in the country.
One defector recounted, “To block the people’s eyes and ears, they strengthened the crackdowns. It was a form of control aimed at eliminating even the smallest signs of dissatisfaction or complaint.”
