Washington, August 26, 2025: In a notable shift during ongoing trade negotiations with China, former US President Donald Trump announced plans to permit up to 600,000 Chinese students to study at American universities. This new gesture more than doubles the current number of Chinese students in the US, which stands at around 270,000.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump highlighted the importance of educational exchange in fostering improved bilateral relations and emphasized that the US aims to “get along with China” during these critical discussions. The proposal comes amid a backdrop of tariff tensions and ongoing efforts to find common ground between the two economic powers.
Earlier decisions to tighten visa scrutiny and revoke certain Chinese student visas have now given way to a more open stance, signaling a thaw in diplomatic engagement. Trump also expressed openness to meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping to further ease tensions.
This announcement represents a strategic move in the broader framework of US-China trade talks aimed at balancing economic interests and diplomatic cooperation
