New Delhi, September 20, 2025: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today reacted to reports of proposed restrictions on the US H-1B visa programme, stating that the government is closely studying the full implications of the measure.
In an official statement, the MEA noted that Indian industry has already released an initial analysis clarifying certain perceptions about the H-1B programme. It stressed that both India and the United States have a shared stake in innovation and creativity, and stakeholders in both countries are expected to consult on a balanced path forward.
The statement underscored that skilled talent mobility has significantly contributed to technological progress, economic growth, and strong people-to-people ties between India and the US.
The MEA also raised concerns about the humanitarian consequences of visa restrictions, particularly disruptions to families, and expressed hope that US authorities will address these suitably.
The H-1B visa curbs by US are expected to raise costs for employers and introduce stricter compliance norms. Given that Indian professionals account for over 70% of all H-1B visas issued annually, any change in the programme is likely to have a direct impact on Indian talent and companies operating in the US.
