Moscow, Russia, September 13, 2025: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Saturday, triggering a tsunami warning for the region.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 39.5 kilometers (24.5 miles). Meanwhile, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a slightly lower magnitude of 7.1, placing the epicenter at a shallower depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
Seismologists have cautioned that the tremor could generate dangerous waves within a 300-kilometer radius of the epicenter, posing the risk of a destructive tsunami.
This latest quake comes just two months after a devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit the same region in July 2025, unleashing waves up to 4 meters high. That disaster prompted tsunami alerts across 10 countries, including Russia, Japan, the US, China, and Canada, and caused widespread destruction along with loss of life.
Authorities in Russia and neighboring coastal nations are closely monitoring the situation, with emergency services on high alert.
